— Sombras

“Sombras” is built in a sort of unusual scenic landscape, full of unexpected and contrasting events. It is a multidisciplinary show, decidedly set against the habits  of the “merger” or “world music”. Fado is about a suffering heart and Fandango is about a kind of euphoric ride.

It’s a play that resembles the installation, rehearsal or scenic experience. So it is something experimental where Kagel’s music is rehearsed. Kagel, an Argentinian composer somehow dramatic, sometimes surprising or even magical and therefore,  not unrelated to Luis de Matos’ participation in this project, which confers a sensorial fantasy  to the acoustic and visual show, where elements of the percussion group Drumming, directed by Miguel Bernat, and scenically directed by Nuno Cardoso, have created a show that clearly makes the difference.  Set design seeks to integrate, from this cast and this process, opposing expressions as an architect does when designing a project.

“The Idea”

In a partnership with Teresa Grácio in this work of permanent reconfiguration and reconstruction of scenes, spaces and identities for different conceptions and shows, in Pas de cinq +1 we try to work out the boundary definitions through geometric abstraction … signs that were drawn on stage and that defined territories. From the almost anthropological expression, the scenic object, curved and endless, closed the room down and established a desired and also necessary continuity: it created an arena at the São João National Theatre and proposed a design exercise, accuracy and continuity, where the different times of the room, the audience, the musicians and the scene, were all in tune … without different expressions and languages … unequivocally, a prolific drawing , almost mathematical, but engaging; an object that leads us to the stage and joins us such as the music that acts and also builds space.

We stole a song’s title from the Três Tristes Tigres last album (and we will probably steal the song itself) to attribute names to a rare spectacle.

Jeff Cohen, the admirable American pianist living in Paris, manages, together with Luís Madureira,  a choice of actors, our employees, in a workshop developed in three periods from which a “recital” for piano and voice comes out. Random songs, music-hall songs or simply  songs – the actors sing, in an apprenticeship of other musical-theatrical adventures that are a secret, for the time being…

The work on the acoustic shell assumes a particular relevance in this work. First, because it should show the acoustic aspects for which it had been projected and it should demonstrate the scenographic and flexibility capabilities that are required.

If the first time there was no doubt of the “scientific” studies and models made, it was the second aspect that would require greater dedication and invention. In the background, it was created a dramatic space, not just based on a text but also on a form and a pre-defined structure.

The process of addition and subtraction of modules, the clash of scales and dimensions of objects and the perspective work on the construction of different space readings allowed to create a visual narrative quite different and showed a particular expression of a contemporary vision of Hayden that we wanted to recover and dust the conventional notion of opera, now in the São João National Theatre.

““O Grande Teatro do Mundo” is the culmination of the baroque dramatic poetry. The uniqueness of this work is due to the fact of embodying, better than any other, the aesthetics and poetics of the Baroque; the scenic quality of the archetype piece is representative of the purest and most refined concept of Baroque art in all its fullness and greatness.

The seventeenth century theatrical overflow “should lead to the conscience of all, the feeling that life is itself a representation, that the world is a theatre” (Orozco), and Calderon the architect of this scenic theatrical era: the most symbolic playwright  of the Baroque .

I recall the invitation … some curtains. I thought of fabric … I interpreted the place and refused the idea’s immediacy… I went fishing to other seas … maybe mine…. most architectural  … most physical, focused on solemn and serious subjects as the walls of the Great Hall of the São João National Theatre. Maybe because of this reason, too, it could not have been! In this space designed by Marques da Silva, I thought I would hear old words, texts from other places and someone from behind says, “it’s just utilitarianism, ma’am. What kills us all, kills us all, ma’am.”

Hundreds of meters of steel wire built, like this one, another place of knowledge and light!
