TVI News: The architect Nuno Lacerda has created a project in which he tries to reuse the remains of materials that were destroyed in the fires in Pedrógão Grande. The pieces will be on display in Lisbon, and the total revenue goes to associations.

Pyros is on display today, 16 October 2020, at Coletivo 284, an exhibition space at Rua das Amoreiras 72-A, Lisbon.

Pyros is an exclusive (unrepeatable…) collection of pieces of furniture made from burnt wood, created to draw attention to the problem of the fires that destroy our forests every year. Challenged by FCB Lisbon, Architect Carlos Nuno Lacerda Lopes gave life to this impressive collection of “anti-design” furniture.

The Pyros Collection is a project created to alert authorities to the importance of fire prevention. A set of “anti-design” pieces of furniture created from burnt wood.

In this sense, the environmental defence and conservation organisation will offer one of the pieces in the collection to João Pedro Matos Fernandes, Minister for the Environment and Climate Action. The aim is “to remind the authorities of the fires of 2019 and to encourage the government to create prevention measures, which will prevent major tragedies in the future, such as the 2017 fire in Pedrógão Grande, which killed 66 people.

The initiative was launched on the same day that the organisation published the Iberian Fire Report, which stresses that this means “investing in prevention on a global scale: fighting climate change, managing the territory, promoting profitable and less inflammable landscapes, reducing accidents and halting deforestation in the tropics.

— 20 years on the Multimeios construction

“Centro Multimeios de Espinho is the result of the will to build an emblematic work capable of translating a new and different way of pursuing a cultural ideal, open to the encounter and participation of the population in a comprehensive perspective. A centre dedicated to receiving and integrating the different artistic, scientific and communication expressions that the new technologies and current communication capacities allow to relate and realise. In this sense it seeks to be a fundamental point of the disciplinary crossroads that current affairs and youth claim as theirs”.

On its twentieth anniversary, Multimeios continues to be a project of international reference and a space designed to welcome and disseminate culture in its most diverse forms. Music, Plastic Arts, Literature, Cinema, Animation… research in the field of Astronomy. Multimeios was designed as a universal and open space to receive a very transversal public, with diverse interests and of all ages.

For the past three decades, we have been studying, researching and developing architectures focused on Man and its Way of Living. We believe in architecture as a sensorial and emotional experience and we understand that space must have, as a common denominator, the happiness and well-being, both physical and psychological, of each of its users.

12 years ago, our CEO Nuno Lacerda Lopes had just finished defending his doctoral thesis where he developed an extensive study about the project and the new ways of inhabiting. Several years later, and based on our extensive experience in this field, we consider that the exceptionality of the current circumstances, where all assumptions, spaces and functionalities are called into question – pushed to the limit – require and justify an approach capable of launching guidelines for a new way of inhabiting.

New People New Housing (NPNH) is a project which aims to propose new and innovative solutions, seeking to establish relationships between different ways of living, eating, sleeping, resting and being in a house – new ways of living – taking into account the changes that are happening right now within our societies: new circumstances, new tools, new solutions, new requirements, new concerns, new needs, new tasks, new activities, new loves, new relationships … new lives!

We seek to develop a detailed and careful investigation, culminating in the presentation of innovative ideas, spaces and architectures: distinct concepts of living, for the New Housing of the New People. We established, as methodology, the constitution of a periodic table for architecture, where we classify several components that may qualify the new ways of living developed in this research. These elements are the “ingredients” that compose our studies and solutions: the pills, which we symbolically represent, are the materialization of new concepts for a more adequate and effective living for today.
And because we believe that true research – one that advances and adds something to the body of common knowledge – should be free, open and discussed, we will share our results, ideas and products with you. In the near future we will launch a series of concepts, versatile and diverse, so that they can be used by each one of us, so different, so special, so unique.
